Congress set to conclude FY18 Funding Negotiations

Next week, Appropriation Committees from both the U.S. House and Senate will aim to finalize drafts of an omnibus spending bill for the rest of Fiscal Year 2018, in hopes to avoid another government shutdown on March 23. Lawmakers are currently writing the $1.2 trillion legislation, as leaders want to finish negotiations by the end of next week and file it by March 12th to have enough time for the House to begin final passage of the bill. With close to 40 key congressional visits scheduled, NAHMA members will be meeting with lawmakers during our annual conference next week and highlighting the importance of finishing this year’s funding, as well at strengthening the LIHTC.  You can find additional information on our recent Grassroots Alert.

HUD Secretary Carson attends White House Opioid Summit

HUD Secretary Carson attended an Opioid Addiction Summit, hosted at White House by President Trump and the First Lady. Secretary Carson joined other Senior Administration officials, including: Presidential Advisor Kellyanne Conway, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar; and the Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin. HUD Secretary Carson stated, “Drug addiction lands at an intersection of health, housing, and economic opportunity. It is especially dangerous to the communities HUD serves, so we are being vigilant in our efforts to protect them. The Opioid Crisis is a challenge that will take our combined resources and ingenuity to solve—but together, we CAN solve it, and save thousands of lives in the process. I look forward to further collaboration with my fellow agency heads.” HUD Secretary Carson’s attendance at the Opioid Summit follows a week of negative press coverage for lavish spending on office decorations, which has resulted in additional scrutiny from the House Oversight Committee.
