Congress on Memorial Day Recess

This week, lawmakers were on Recess in their home districts as they gear up for a busy congressional schedule in June and July. They return next week to continue negotiations on fiscal year 2020 funding for affordable housing and community development programs, disaster relief legislation, and the debt ceiling.

Save the Date for HUD’s Innovative Housing Showcase

HUD invites the public to the National Mall for its inaugural “Innovative Housing Showcase.” The showcase will run from June 1-5, 2019, to engage with leaders and companies who are working to make housing more affordable for working families and resilient to natural disasters.

This five-day event will feature in depth discussions with leaders in government and across the housing industry, and more than a dozen exhibitors will be displaying model homes and innovative building technologies that address affordability and resiliency.

The showcase will be open to the public and free of charge. For more details—including operating hours, event location, exhibitors, and speakers—please visit www.hud.gov/innovative_housing.

Help NAHMA Transform Lives Through Literacy

NAHMA members are promoting adult literacy by connecting affordable housing residents to a free app for improving reading and English skills. The app is available for download until Aug. 31 and every day counts. You can help spread the word by simply distributing flyers available on NAHMA’s Transforming Lives Through Literacy webpage.

This effort is a result of NAHMA being named one of 24 finalists selected as a milestone award winner in the proposal phase of the Adult Literacy XPRIZE Communities Competition. As a milestone winner, NAHMA moves onto the second phase, which consists of promoting the download and use of the free adult literacy learning app.

To help NAHMA succeed in promoting adult literacy and demonstrating that housing is a platform for success, please distribute the English and Spanish flyers throughout your companies, communities, and to on-site staff.
