NAHMA Joins Industry Partners Asking Congress to support H.R. 802, the Respect State Housing Laws Act. This bill eliminates a provision that requires a 30-day notice period before a landlord may begin eviction proceedings against a tenant in federally assisted or federally backed housing.
Additionally, NAHMA joined another industry coalition letter to the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s Request for Information (RFI) on Tenant Protections. Industry comments centered on Housing Supply and Affordability Needs; Rental Housing is Already a Heavily Regulated Industry; Federal Policies Should Target the Root Causes of Eviction, As It Is Almost Always a Last Resort; and Rent Control and Other Price Control Measures Have Been Repeatedly Proven to Both Limit the Supply of Rental Housing and Increase Costs.

Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act Reaches Milestone
Great News!!! With your advocacy, the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2023, the comprehensive Housing Credit expansion and reform bill, reaches a milestone of gaining support from a third of lawmakers in Congress. Please find more in a recent update from the Action Campaign. The U.S. House version of the bill (H.R. 3238) has 151 Representatives as cosponsors, with 75 Republicans and 76 Democrats. The U.S. Senate version of the bill (S. 1557) has 28 Senators, evenly divided with Republicans and Democrats.
Per the Action Campaign, which NAHMA is a member, please continue to help build co-sponsorship and remind supporting Members of Congress to prioritize the Housing Credit in any legislative vehicles this fall. There is a number of resources to help advocate for the Housing Credit in our online Advocacy Toolkit, including a newly released in-district advocacy guide with ideas and actions that advocates can take during the August congressional recess.
