NAHMA Meets with Senate Banking Committee Staff

This week, NAHMA staff participated in an industry coalition meeting with majority and minority staff of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the process for moving forward the Housing Opportunities Through Modernization Act (H.R. 3700) in the Senate. Additionally, there was discussion on current committee priorities and the outlook for the remainder of 2016. Participating in the meeting were over 40 representatives from the affordable housing industry.

The committee staff could not provide much on the status of the committee’s agenda, but they did acknowledged and appreciated the advocacy efforts that have been made on H.R. 3700. Recently, NAHMA and other groups signed on to an industry letter that called for Banking Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Ranking Member Sherrod Brown (D-OH) to pass the bill. There was overwhelming support for H.R. 3700 in the House of Representatives from both Democrats and Republicans – the bill recently passed the House by 427-0. This display of bipartisan support demonstrates the importance of the legislation and its goal to address a number of significant housing items which have had broad consensus over the years.

NAHMA will continue the open dialogue with the Senate on passing H.R.3700, and we continue to urge members to voice their support for the bill to their Senators.
