2004 National Communities of Quality Award Winners

December 15, 2004, Alexandria, Va. – The National Affordable Housing Management Association (NAHMA) is pleased to announce the winners of its 2004 Communities of Quality Awards™ program. Now in its 12th year, the COQ awards honor the achievements of affordable housing providers who make an unprecedented contribution to developing outstanding properties for families of modest means. The awards are co-sponsored by The Home Depot Supply™ (formerly Maintenance Warehouse®), a leading supplier of maintenance and renovation products to the multihousing industry.

The COQ awards recognize outstanding property-management companies that demonstrate the highest possible quality of safe, affordable housing for lower-income families at particular sites.

The 2004 COQ winners are:

  • Exemplary Family Development: Lane Management, Inc., Huntsville, Ala., for The Pines Apartments, Knoxville, Tenn.
  • Outstanding Turnaround of a Troubled Property: Next Step Housing, Seattle, Wash., for The Sommerset Apartments in Yakima, Wash.
  • Exemplary Development for the Elderly or Disabled: National Church Residences, Columbus, Ohio, for Hilltop Senior Village, Columbus, Ohio

Winners were chosen from among nominations submitted to each of the 20 regional Affordable Housing Management Associations (AHMAs) nationwide, which hold the first round of the competition. Entrants are judged on the physical and financial condition of the properties; the quality of life they offer to residents; the level of resident involvement in planning and problem solving; and the nature of collaborations with other organizations and agencies that contribute to the betterment of the lives of residents and the communities at large.

“The COQ awards recognize how well many companies are doing in maintaining and managing affordable housing that enhances the lives of residents while adding value to surrounding communities,” said NAHMA President Jim McGrath, HCCP, NAHP-e.

Mike Hendel, Director of Multifamily Business Development, The Home Depot Supply, said his company is proud to be involved in an awards program that recognizes the importance of property maintenance in both protecting assets and retaining satisfied residents. “We appreciate NAHMA for recognizing properties where management is doing an outstanding job of keeping their buildings and grounds safe and attractive,” he said.

The COQ awards will be presented at NAHMA’s annual winter meeting, March 5-8, 2005, in Washington, D.C.
