Art Contest Winners Depict a World of Hope For Residents of Affordable Housing

Alexandria, VA – For the 21st year, the National Affordable Housing Management Association (NAHMA) is proud to announce the winners of its annual art/calendar contest, whose traditional anti-drug message was complemented by the theme of “A New World of Hope,” with a sub-theme promoting “The Promise of Technology.”

Thousands of children and elderly or disabled residents nationwide who live in affordable homes owned or operated by a member of NAHMA and/or a local Affordable Housing Management Association (AHMA) participated in the contest. The full-color calendars feature the artwork of children and seniors who reside in affordable, multifamily housing all across the country. Children (grades K-12), seniors (age 62 or older) and special needs residents competed in the national calendar contest and winners were selected by a panel of independent judges this past June. Children and seniors competing in the national contest are selected from the thousands who participate in the regional poster contests sponsored by local Affordable Housing Management Associations across the country.

This year’s grand-prize winner is Sergio Rodriguez, a 12th-grader who lives in the Astoria Gardens Apartments in Sylmar, Calif. His entry was submitted by AHMA-Pacific Southwest. Rodriguez’s artwork will grace the cover of NAHMA’s 2008 calendar. He will also receive a $2,500 U.S. Savings Bond from the NAHMA Educational Foundation, which will be presented in Washington, D.C. at NAHMA’s fall meeting October 28-30, 2007.

In addition to Rodriguez’s cover art, 12 additional winners will have their work displayed on the inside the pages of the 2008 calendar. Each of these winners will receive a $1,000 Savings Bond from the Foundation. Seniors who win receive cash awards made in the name to their community for use in purchasing a gift that will benefit all of the community’s residents (e.g., books for the library, appliances for a community room, etc.). These winners will also appear in the 2008 calendar. Artwork that earned an Honorable Mention will be featured in a special section of the calendar.

Because of its strong anti-drug message, the calendar is an allowable project expense for managers of housing subsidized by HUD and the Department of Agriculture. Tax credit properties that purchase calendars benefit twofold: by supporting the drug-free message and their own commitment to social services, while potentially obtaining more points in the funding-allocation process.

Calendars may be ordered by calling (703) 683-8630 or ordering from NAHMA 's webstore. Calendars cost $5.50 each.

NAHMA is the leading advocate for multifamily property managers and owners whose mission is to provide quality affordable housing.
